Welcome to 2.1 Qualitative Analysis: An Introduction. This website will provide an introduction to Level 2 qualitative analysis and to precipitation reactions used to determine ions present in solutions. Precipitate n. A solid formed by a reaction in solution; a precipitate settles out of solution. In other words, a precipitate is a solid that forms in a chemical reaction. Different chemicals will produce different coloured solids, that will react to other chemicals in different ways. At level two, you need to be able to identify some ions in solution. This is done by reacting the unknown solution with known chemicals. The products, or lack of products will tell you what ions are present in the solution. |
